A man has died after he was struck by a car just moments after falling from another vehicle on the Pacific Motorway.
The man, aged in his 20s, was a passenger in a Mercedes which was travelling northbound through Chinderah around 6.30pm on Wednesday when he fell from the vehicle and onto the road.
The man was then struck by another passing vehicle, suffering critical injuries.
Members of the public rushed to the man’s aid, but he could not be revived and died at the scene.
The driver of the Mercedes, a 27-year-old man, was subjected to a roadside breath test which allegedly returned a positive result.
He was arrested and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis, which allegedly returned a reading of 0.074.
The man was given an infringement notice for low range PCA and taken to Tweed Valley Hospital for mandatory testing.
The fatal crash shut down the northbound lanes of the M1 for around five hours while officers from the Crash Investigation Unit probed the crime scene.

They’re appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or has dashcam footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
A report will also be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
