A man has been charged with attempted murder after a Sydney police officer was allegedly stabbed in the head.
Two officers were conducting traffic duties at the intersection of Castlereagh and Park Streets in the CBD around 1pm on Sunday, when one male constable was approached from behind by a man.
Police allege the man, aged 34, produced a knife and stabbed the officer in the head.
The man fled but was chased by the injured officer and a female constable into Hyde Park, where he was tasered and arrested.
The injured 35-year-old officer, who has been identified as Constable Elvis Poa, was treated at the scene by paramedics for two wounds to his head.
He was then taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, where scans have since revealed he suffered two skull fractures and remains in a stable condition.
His alleged attacker was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital under police guard for assessment.
Upon being released from hospital, the man was taken to Day Street Police Station and charged with cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder.
He was refused bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court today.
