Queensland households are being given another helping hand by the State Government when it comes to soaring power bills.
The Premier has today announced a major cash windfall that will see all households across the state receive a minimum $1000 rebate on their electricity bills from July.
The move, which is believed to be the biggest cost of living initiative by a state government ever, almost doubles the $550 electricity rebate that was announced in last year’s budget.
“The direct return to households recognises the increased pressure on household budgets as a result of growing everyday expenses like mortgage repayments, rent, groceries and fuel,” Steven Miles said.
“These savings for households are made possible because the government has made multinational coal mining companies pay their fair share with progressive coal royalties”.
Vulnerable households, including eligible seniors, pensioners and concession card holders will receive an even greater windfall, with $1,372 off their power bills.
The upfront $1,000 rebates will be applied to household bills from July, with a special appropriation bill set to be introduced in Parliament to bring forward the payment.
“Most Queenslanders will not pay a single cent on their first power bill of the next financial year and many won’t pay another bill until 2025,” the Premier said.
According to the State Government, the new rebate will nearly halve the average yearly household power bill in Queensland for 2024-25.
