Gold Coast motorists are being warned a section of one of the city’s busiest arterial roads will be off-limits for six months from today.

Wardoo Street has been closed between Benowa Road and Cotlew Street as the congested intersection is transformed from a roundabout to traffic lights.

Detours are now in place for drivers, however, local residents are being assured they will still have access to their properties.

“This is a large project and we thank the community for their patience and cooperation,” Executive General Manager Infrastructure Gold Coast Michael Kahler said.

“The road closure will enable the balance of the works to be completed safely and efficiently.”

Motorists are being told the inconvenience will be short-term pain for long-term gain.

“Once complete these upgrades will reduce traffic congestion at the intersection, provide safer road conditions and deliver better facilities for active travel such as walking, cycling and public transport,” Mr Kahler said.

“With 20,000 vehicles using this road each day, peak traffic times are becoming increasingly busy. The road is deteriorating and the existing roundabout is no longer meeting capacity and safety requirements.

“The Gold Coast population is expected to reach 800,000 by 2031 so now is the time to ensure we have road infrastructure to support a growing population and increased demand on the transport system.

“We ask residents and commuters to be patient, observe any traffic signs and allow some extra travel time during the upgrades.”
