Matildas superstar Sam Kerr is set to face a criminal trial in the UK for the alleged “racially aggravated harassment” of a police officer.
The 30-year-old appeared in a London Court via video link on Monday, where she pleaded not guilty to the charge.
It’s alleged that the Australian skipper used “insulting, threatening or abusive words that caused alarm or distress to PC Lovell” during an incident in Twickenham on January 30, 2023.
However, it’s understood Kerr’s defence will argue that she did not intend to cause alarm, harassment or distress to the officer and that it was not racially aggrevated.
According to local media in the UK, Kerr will face a four-day trial in February next year.
Football Australia has released a statement, maintaining their support for the injured skipper.
“Football Australia is aware of legal proceedings involving Sam Kerr in the United Kingdom,” the statement said.
“Our focus remains on supporting all our players, both on and off the field.”
Kerr currently remains sidelined from playing for both Chelsea and Australia after rupturing her ACL in January.
