It’s officially the end of the world. A ‘national emergency’ has been declared as frustrated Australians find themselves without a pantry staple deemed an absolute necessity on their burgers.
The shortage of canned beetroot at major supermarkets, has left many shoppers reeling. If you have a can in your cupboard, make sure you keep it under lock and key…
Customers have taken to social media to express their disappointment at not being able to find their favourite pantry item to add to beloved Aussie burger.
Bad weather has been blamed for the shortage in Australia and also in NZ.
A Woolworths spokesperson spoke to News.com.au stating, “Due to adverse growing conditions, customers may notice varying supply levels of canned beetroot available across our store network. We’re working closely with our suppliers and implementing contingency plans to minimise disruptions for our customers.”
As reported by The Guardian, the shortage is a result of Cyclone Gabrielle devastating beetroot farms in New Zealand last year, leaving domestic growers unprepared to make up the difference.
Whether you’re an avid Aussie tinned beetroot lover or not, it is a topic that has divided the country. Many people are happy with the shortage, with one user commenting “I loathe beetroot. It’s disgusting” on a recent post.
We can all take a sigh of relief as Australia’s 2024 crop is apparently looking promising and supermarkets assure us to expect more stock on shelves in the coming months. Phew…
