A driver has had to be arrested on the side of the road in Southport following a dramatic two car smash.

Police allege a red Mitsubishi Mirage was stopped at a set of traffic lights on High Street around 9.30pm on Wednesday when it was rear-ended by a blue Ford Focus.

The impact of the crash caused the Ford Focus to roll.

While emergency crews worked to free the motorist, police pinned the driver of the second car to the ground.

He was arrested at the scene before being taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The other motorist was also hospitalised in a stable condition.

Charges are yet to be laid, with investigations ongoing.
