It’s set to be a scorcher across the Gold Coast today, as a heatwave gripping the South East reaches its peak.
The mercury is expected to soar into the high 30s across the city, with some parts of the coast bracing for a sweltering top of 36 degrees.
To make things even worse, the high humidity is likely to make it feel even warmer.
As a result, a heatwave warning has been issued for the South East, with fans and airconditioners expected to work in overdrive.
It’ll likely see our power grid pushed to the limit, but the State Government is confident the system will be able to handle the expected increase in load.
“This is an extreme weather event, so the power system will be pushed to the limit today,” Energy Minister Mick De Brenni said.
“Our teams are monitoring and managing the situation very closely.
“At this stage, we don’t need to intervene, and our message is, if you need to use appliances then absolutely do that. But if you dont, then that will help”.
