LATEST @ 12.45pm, January 1 | Residents near a number of Gold Coast rivers and creeks are being warned to prepare to move to higher ground as water levels rise rapidly.

The updated Watch and Act alert is in place for the Pimpama River, Coomera River, Nerang River, Mudgeeraba Creek, Tallebudgera Creek and Currumbin Creek.

The Coomera River at Clagiraba Rd and the Pimpama River at Stewarts Rd remain at major flood levels.

Minor flood levels have been reached at the Coomera River at the Oxenford Weir and Mudgeeraba Creek at Mudgeeraba.

The Bureau has warned that more heavy rainfall is expected for the remainder of Monday and into Tuesday.

LATEST @ 11AM, January 1 | A flood warning has now been issued for the Gold Coast as heavy rain continues to batter the city.

The flood warning comes on top of the severe weather warning already in place across the Gold Coast, with the southeast already hit by several storms today.

The BOM is warning of potentially dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding with isolated rainfall totals between 100mm and 180mm over a three to six-hour period.

Council has also issued a Watch and Act alert with residents urged to prepare for the possibility of flooding

Parts of the Hinterland have already copped the brunt of it with Upper Springbrook recording a whopping 389mm in the 24 hours to 9am.

Springbrook recorded 351mm while 276mm was recorded at Little Nerang Dam.

The BOM has now upgraded the flood watch to an initial flood warning for the Nerang and Coomera Rivers and surrounding creeks.

It warns that river levels are rising in the Nerang, Coomera and Pimpama Rivers while water levels are also rising in Mudgeeraba, Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creeks.

River levels have already reached major along the Coomera River at Clagiraba Rd and the Pimpama River at Stewarts Rd.

The Coomera River at the Oxenford Weir is already at minor flood levels, along with Mudgeeraba Creek at Mudgeeraba.

A number of roads have already been closed or are being impacted by floodwaters with motorists urged to avoid travelling today.

Council has also opened up sandbagging stations due to the flood risk.

Stations at Pimpama (232 Old Pacific Highway) and Bilinga (42-44 Boyd Street) will be open from 10am to 6pm.
