Queensland is continuing to ramp up its crackdown on e-scooter riders.
Transport Minister Mark Bailey will today introduce new legislation to State Parliament that will see those riding recklessly on footpaths and bike paths face hefty fines.
Currently, e-scooter riders and cyclists are already required to ride with due care and attention on roads, but the proposed laws will now extend that to shared paths.
Those caught doing the wrong thing won’t be issued on-the-spot fines, but will instead be required to face court where they could be hit with a fine of more than $6000.
Riders will also be required to remain at the scene of a crash to render medical assistance and exchange relevant information.
“These rules will mean e-scooters and bike riders will have the same responsibilities as all other drivers on the road – making it safer for everyone,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.
It comes after a young woman was rushed to hospital in a serious condition following a pedestrian and e-scooter incident in Brisbane overnight.
The woman, aged in her 20s, was left with a serious head injury following the crash at the intersection of Elizabeth and Edward Streets around 6pm.
