Petrol prices across the southeast have soared to record levels with motorists urged to fill up the tank now.

One petrol station in Carrara and another in Nerang have hiked up prices to $2.37 a litre.

While a number of servos on the southern Gold Coast have already started charging around $2.30 a litre for unleaded.

The higher prices are being driven by an increase in demand over the holiday period and a cut in production by oil producers.

And the pain is set to last with experts tipping prices to remain high for a while.

However, motorists on the Gold Coast can still find themselves some reasonably priced petrol.

Most servos are still charging under $2 a litre while according to PetrolSpy the best price on the Gold Coast on Wednesday morning was $1.95 a litre at Pearl Energy in Robina.

The higher petrol prices are also set to impact inflation.

Monthly inflation data will be released on Wednesday with experts tipping a slight rise in the annual rate thanks largely to fuel costs.
