Confronting new figures have revealed the full extent of the domestic violence crisis on the Gold Coast.
Queensland Police Service data found in the 12 months to May 2023 the number of DVO breaches on the Gold Coast surpassed 5000.
Since 2015, the stats show there’s been a shocking 171% increase in breaches – or an annual increase of 22%.
The figures have sparked pressure from the State Opposition for the Queensland Government to urgently fix the escalating problem.
Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Amanda Camm says the drastic rise in breaches is extremely concerning.
“The warning signs were there, but after eight years in office, and two major inquiries, the Palaszczuk Labor Government has only delivered chaos and crisis,” Shadow Minister Camm claims.
“Women and children have seen no improvement over the time of this Government,
“Not Now, Not Ever gave a pathway to reform. Hear Her Voice echoed many of those recommendations and gave a clear direction for the future. We’ve seen the Government drag their feet in the implementation of Hear Her Voice, but victims can’t wait.”
Shadow Minister Camm believes police are doing “an incredible job” but are under-resourced.
“We know DV callouts are taking up a significant part of police resources and with less police on the ground the system is even more under pressure,”
“We need to know when a victim calls for help there will be someone available to come.”
