Motorists are being warned to expect significant delays when construction of Light Rail Stage Three ramps up from this weekend.

From Sunday, northbound traffic on the Gold Coast Highway through part of Mermaid Beach will be reduced to just one lane while major underground works are done.

The changes will affect traffic between Markeri Street to Cronulla Avenue for several weeks, however, tram bosses have defended the move.

“This will allow more Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 infrastructure works to be completed during each shift because it creates a larger workspace, where multiple crews can work in the same area at the same time,” GoldlinQ CEO Phil Mumford said.

“We are focused on getting the work done as quickly as possible, which is why this approach is being taken.

“We thank motorists for their patience and understanding during the construction of this important project.”

Motorists are being urged to consider using alternative routes instead, including Pacific Avenue and Sunshine Boulevard.

Traffic control officers will be on scene to help motorists, cyclists and pedestrians move safely around the work zones.

There will also be parking changes in place along the busy route.
