A female traffic controller is fighting for her life in hospital after being hit by a car on the southern Gold Coast.

The 39-year-old woman was controlling traffic at the intersection of Gold Coast Highway and Twenty First Avenue in Palm Beach when she was struck just before 3pm on Wednesday.

The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital with critical injuries.

The driver of the car, a 46-year-old man, was also taken to hospital for shock.

He will continue to assist police with their investigations today.

Forensic Crash unit investigations are ongoing.
