The State Government has announced a massive shake-up to rental reforms in a bid to ease cost-of-living pressures facing Queenslanders.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has taken to social media to confirm the Government is proposing to limit rent increases in Queensland to just once a year.

The move would bring the sunshine state into line with other Australian jurisdictions like Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and New South Wales.

“Today we’re taking action to give people who are renting a fairer go,” the Premier said.

“Weekly rents are rapidly increasing – sometimes going up $200 or even $400… It’s not right.

“That’s why we’re proposing to limit rent increases to once a year, rather than every six months.

“And we will provide more emergency funding to house homeless families.”

It comes as Queensland faces the worst rent inflation in the country.

The State’s rate of homelessness has also increased by 22% in the past four years, which is almost three times the national increase.

Dozens of representatives from government agencies, peak bodies and support organisations will gather in Brisbane for another housing roundtable today to discuss solutions.
