A man has been charged after he allegedly defrauded an elderly man after he died in Sydney’s south.

Police launched an investigation in January after the relatives of the 73-year-old man, who passed away in August 2022, reported his debit card had allegedly been stolen and used fraudulently.

Following extensive inquiries, investigators arrested a 28-year-old man at a home in Punchbowl about 7am yesterday.

“Police will allege in court the 28-year-old man had cared for the 73-year-old man at an aged care facility in Brighton-Le-Sands and stole his debit card,” NSW Police said.

“It will be further alleged the man used the card to pay for food, clothing, cigarettes, streaming services and public transport.”

The man was taken to Campsie Police Station, where he was charged with larceny and dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception.

Investigations are continuing.
