A teenage boy is fighting for life after being airlifted to the Gold Coast for treatment following a horror crash in rural NSW.

The boy had been driving along a country road, in the Northern Tablelands when he smashed into a tree on Saturday.

The impact caused the driver to be trapped inside the vehicle, until emergency services arrived on scene and were able to rescue him.

A Toowoomba-based LifeFlight helicopter crew was called to the scene, with the pilot able to land the helicopter on the road, which had been closed by NSW Police.
