LATEST @ 2.00 PM | Police are investigating whether a child custody battle may have been behind a fatal house fire at New Beith in Logan.

A 31-year-old woman allegedly broke into the home of her ex-partner around 3.00am on Thursday, before dousing it in fuel and setting it alight.

The woman died at the scene, while the 33-year-old man remains fighting for his life in hospital.

His new girlfriend suffered airway burns, while three children aged 5, 3 and 2 thankfully managed to escape uninjured.

Superintendent Mark White said the deceased woman and man did have a history of domestic violence.

“Police have had contact with the male victim and ex-partner in relation to domestic violence incidents and that will form part of our investigation,” Detective Supt White said.

“We do believe that there were proceedings that had been progressing around the custody of the children”.
