A man has been charged after allegedly spitting in the face of a Police officer during an arrest in Mermaid Waters.

Police were called to a convenience store on Saturday morning after reports of a man armed with a baseball bat outside.

Officers swarmed the area, arresting two men and a woman after locating an allegedly stolen vehicle.

“During that arrest, unfortunately, one of those males did, it’s an absolutely disgusting act, and that’s actually turned around and spat straight in the face of one of our officers,” Acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Wildman told the ABC.

“We talk about COVID, we talk about hepatitis and all the other risks that are out there, well our officers are at a higher risk because of the type of role they do.”

The officer has since been given the all-clear after undergoing tests.

The incident followed an alleged attempt to steal a car from the driveway of a home in Tallai.
