A man has been injured in a nasty workplace accident in Broadbeach this morning.

It happened at a construction site along George Avenue just before 8am.

It’s understood a piling rig collapsed before tipping over, coming frighteningly close to nearby properties.

“At approximately 8am this morning Queensland Ambulance Service received a triple-0 call for a 67-year-old male that had been thrown from a 55-tonne piling rig,” Queensland Ambulance Service Operations Supervisor Joel McEwan said.

“The rig is used to drill quite deep holes on large construction sites.

“QAS responded with critical care, paramedic and high acuity response units. We located a 67-year-old male with an open fracture to his lower leg.”

The man was treated at the scene by paramedics and administered with pain relief before being taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Authorities say he and his colleagues were extremely lucky to have not been more seriously injured.
