Much-loved Australian singer and actress, Dame Olivia Newton-John, has died aged 73.

The entertainment icon’s husband John Easterling shared the sad news in a post on Facebook on Tuesday morning.

“Dame Olivia Newton-John passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends,” the post said.

“We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

The four-time Grammy winner, who shot to fame with her role as Sandy in the 1978 film Grease, passed away following a lengthy battle with breast cancer.

“Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer,” the statement said.

“Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer.”

“In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made in her memory to the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund (ONJFoundationFund.org)”.

Olivia is survived by her husband John, daughter Chloe Lattanzi, sister Sarah Newton-John, brother Toby Newton-John and nieces and nephews.

Tributes have begun flooding in for the Australian icon following the news of her death, with her Grease co-star and long-time friend John Travolta leading the heartfelt messages.

“My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better,” he wrote in a post on social media.

“Your impact was incredible. I love you so much.

“We will see you down the road and we will all be together again.
