A Molendinar man has been charged after allegedly spitting on police following a dramatic crash in Ashmore.

The 50-year-old is accused of smashing his car into a ute towing a boat at the intersection of Currumburra Road and Southport Nerang Road just before 5pm on Sunday.

The man was breath tested at the scene, blowing almost four times the legal alcohol limit.

He was transported to hospital under police guard after suffering a minor head injury in the crash, with police alleging he spat on an officer while enroute.

The man has since been charged with serious assault police and driving under the influence of liquor.

He will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on October 10.

It comes as a 19-year-old man was charged overnight after also allegedly spitting at police on the Gold Coast.
