A woman is in a critical condition in the Gold Coast University Hospital after being stabbed several times following a fight at Tweed Heads.

Another woman has been taken into custody over the horror attack, which occurred around 1.40pm on Wednesday.

Police say the pair, aged 37 and 48, were arguing at a unit block on Seymour Street when it spilled over into the carpark.

“The women had moved to the carpark when the younger woman allegedly assaulted the older woman, knocking her to the ground, stabbing her several times then running away,” NSW Police said.

Police rushed to the scene and provided first aid to the victim before she was taken by ambulance to the Gold Coast University Hospital.

She is currently in a critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery.

The younger woman was arrested nearby and was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station, while a crime scene was established in the unit block and carpark.
