Hundreds of friends and family will today gather to farewell Queensland rugby league player Liam Hampson at a funeral service in Redcliffe.

It comes following the 24-year-old’s tragic death while on an off-season trip of a lifetime around Europe with good friends, including Titans star AJ Brimson and Broncos player Jordan Riki.

The much-loved larrikin, who had a dream of playing NRL for the Dolphins, died after falling 10m from a balcony at a nightclub in Barcelona, Spain in October.

He will be farewelled at an emotional service at his home ground at Moreton Daily Stadium in Redcliffe this afternoon.

“Shit Shirts and Birks” will be the theme of the service.

“As Liam will have wanted we ask that those attending come dressed in, as Liam would say, “Sh*t Shirts and Birks” or casual comfy clothes,” Liam’s father Brett Hampson said.

“We thank everyone for their support and for those who have reached out as we honour Liam’s memory as a community, as a team and as a family.”

An invitation to the service, which begins at 2.30pm, says it will be a “celebration of life”.

A number of Gold Coast Titans players will be among the mourners in attendance, with Hampson having grown up on the coast, attending Keebra Park State High School.

Titans coach Justin Holbrook said several of his players were close with Hampson and will be remembering their much-loved mate today.

“It’s a terrible tragedy,” Holbrook said

“It’s been a really tough time for everyone on the Gold Coast, obviously Liam was up at Redcliffe and spent a lot of time at the Tweed.

“So it’s affected the rugby league community in a big way”.
