The Gold Coast is on the brink of an unleaded fuel price hike in the lead-up to Christmas.

We’re being urged to fill up our tanks while unleaded is still cheap, before it skyrockets to almost $2 a litre.

Every dollar counts at Christmas time, and some servos across the city have already begun hiking up prices.

Tristan Vorias from RACQ says the good news is that there is still plenty of cheap fuel around the Gold Coast.

“If you do your homework, if you shop around the difference between the most expensive and the cheapest fuel sites is around 40cpl in southeast Queensland,” Mr Vorias says.

“So you could be saving yourself around $20 per tank for an average size.”

However, the low prices are not expected to hang around, with Gold Coaster urged to fill up now.

“Right now the average for regular unleaded is 171cpl on the Gold Coast but we don’t expect these prices to last long.”

“Over the next week or so, other fuel companies will lift their prices, which will shift southeast Queensland into the expensive phase of its regular fuel price cycle just in time for Christmas.

On the Gold Coast, 6% of fuel companies have already hiked to 199.9cpl for regular unleaded.

It’s expected the prices won’t fall back into the cheap phase until January.
