An elderly man who was injured in an alleged “cowardly” and “abhorrent” attack by teenagers in Toowoomba has died.

The 75-year-old was rushed to hospital in a critical condition following the alleged assault last Monday.

He’s spent the past week fighting for his life, however, police confirmed in a statement a short time ago that he passed away from his injuries today.

It’s alleged the man was waiting at a taxi-rank on Margaret Street in Toowoomba City around 5pm on February 6, when he was pushed from behind, causing him to fall to the ground.

His backpack was then stolen, with Detective Inspector Heath McQueen last week describing the attack as “brazen, cowardly and abhorrent”.

“The victim had an impairment so had a relatively tough life himself,” he said.

An 18-year-old man, 17-year-old boy, and two 16-year-old boys have already been charged with grievous bodily harm over the assault.

However, their charges are now expected to be upgraded following the man’s death.

Investigations are ongoing.
