UPDATE @ 8.00AM | Massive traffic delays continue on the southern Gold Coast after a crane rolled on its side on the M1 this morning.
The incident happened in the northbound lanes near Exit 87 at West Burleigh around 4.30 this morning.
Police have confirmed the crane was moving concrete blocks at the time.
“It’s fallen and toppled onto its right-hand side and the boom has gone right across the road,” Superintendent Geoff Sheldon has told the ABC.
“I don’t know what the factor was but probably too much weight and over it’s gone and thank goodness no one was injured.”
Workplace Health and Safety are now investigating.
Meantime traffic delays are worsening with motorists urged to delay their trip if possible.
Northbound traffic on the M1 was back to the border at 8am, while southbound traffic was back to Varsity Lakes.
There are extensive delays on the Gold Coast Highway from Bilinga to Tallebudgera Creek.
Roads feeding to the M1 are also clogged including Stewart Rd, KP McGrath Drive, Old Coach Rd and Reedy Creek Rd while traffic is at a standstill on Tallebudegra Connection Rd and Guineas Creek Rd.

EARLIER | Motorists are being warned of significant delays on the M1 this morning after a crane rolled on to its side on the motorway.
It happened in the northbound lanes through the West Burleigh area around 4.30am.
It’s blocked one of the lanes just near the Exit 87 off-ramp.
Delays were quickly stretching back to Currumbin at the time of writing.
Queensland Police have warned motorists of ongoing delays while they work to clear the crane from the roadway.
