Could your spare bedroom change a life?

Australia has over 13 million spare bedrooms, and Churches of Christ is asking families on the Gold Coast to open up theirs to make room for local children in need of foster care.

Churches of Christ’s Grant Hawgood told myGC they are confident the Gold Coast community has the heart and the capacity to meet the urgent need for foster carers.

“Out of 13 million spare bedrooms nationwide, we are hopeful that we can find 100 amongst Gold Coast residents and families,” Mr Hawgood said.

“That spare bedroom can be a room that transforms a vulnerable child’s life with the safety, security and support of a foster carer.

“If individuals or families feel they can provide a safe, stable, caring home for a young person, we really encourage them to take that first step and reach out to us.

“If you have the capacity and heart to care for a child, we’ll support you through the process, and stay connected throughout your care journey,” he said.

Mr Hawgood said that while the prospect of foster caring can be daunting, many carers express how rewarding it is to see the tangible impact they have on a child’s life.

“Foster Carers can choose the length of placements they wish to undertake, from simply stepping in as respite carers when needed for a day or two, to full-time permanent care,” he said.

“The most important qualities we look for in applicants are that you genuinely care about children and you can provide a safe and stable home.”

Churches of Christ works with over 1400 foster carers in Queensland, from all walks of life, all backgrounds and ages.
