Lifeguards will continue to monitor a popular Gold Coast beach closely today after numerous shark sightings.
Swimmers were forced out of the water at Burleigh Beach just before 9.00am on Thursday after a four-foot shark was spotted swimming about 200 metres from the flags.
It occurred as thousands of people flocked to the popular beach for Australia Day.
Authorities monitored the water both from the sea and air, before giving holiday-makers the all-clear to return a short time later.
However, it was take-two around 4.30pm, with swimmers again forced out of the water when another shark was spotted during a patrol by the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.
It’s believed a decomposing turtle may have lured the sharks to the area.
