A major animal cruelty investigation is underway after a dog was thrown off a cliff near Woolongong while trapped inside its kennel.
Police say a man was bushwalking near Clive Bissell Drive at Mount Ousley around 8.30am yesterday when he heard a dog yelping.
The bushwalker searched the area and found an upside-down kennel at the base of the cliff with an Australian Bulldog injured inside.
Officers say the dog was “emaciated and in poor health”.
Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, along with the SES, rushed to the scene and conducted a rescue operation to retrieve the dog.
It was taken to a local vet, however, it sadly had to be euthanised due to its poor condition and injuries.
“An investigation into the incident is underway,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.
“The kennel has been seized and is undergoing forensic examination”.
Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area, or anyone with a dashcam that drove through the area this morning and might have footage that can assist, to contact local police or Crime Stoppers.
