Local lifeguards are pleading with beachgoers to swim between the flags and at patrolled beaches following another tragic drowning on the Gold Coast.

A man in his 20s drowned, and two of his friends are in hospital, after the trio got into trouble while swimming at an unpatrolled area at Main Beach around 4pm on Thursday.

Two of the men, also aged in their 20s, were pulled from the water and given oxygen on the sand.

They were then taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital, where they remain this morning in stable conditions.

Sadly, the third man died at the scene.

It’s understood he was missing for some time before he was pulled from the water in a critical condition.

A responding lifeguard and paramedics immediately commenced CPR, but despite their desperate attempts, he could not be saved.

It’s the second drowning at Gold Coast beaches these school holidays, prompting a warning from authorities to be careful.

They’ve warned of dangerous conditions at our beaches this weekend, with an easterly swell causing strong currents and rips close to shore.

The conditions are expected to stick around for the next few days.
