Police have confirmed they are investigating after a racist banner was displayed across the Pacific Motorway over the weekend.

Images posted to social media showed a group of four masked men hanging a banner, emblazoned with Swastika, across the M1 overpass at Helensvale on Saturday afternoon.

A number of motorists observed the banner and immediately alerted police.

“We actually received numerous calls from members of the community who were on the M1 at Helensvale,” Acting Superintendent Rhys Wildman told the ABC.

“Their concern was not about the banner itself, but more about the banner possibly dropping onto the roadway and causing an accident”.

The State Government is yet to pass legislation to ban public displays of hate symbols like the Nazi flag.

But Acting Supt Rhys Wildman said there are still various options for charges.

“There may be some traffic-related offences involved in this,” he said.

“Also, these types of incidents where we can provide a link to that type of behaviour or messaging that incites others to commit criminal acts then they are liable for whatever offences are committed on the back of that as well”.

Investigations are ongoing.
