A woman has been charged with assaulting police after allegedly threatening officers with a knife at the Southport police station.

The 45-year-old handed herself into police following a nasty crash on the M1 that she had allegedly fled from on Friday morning.

Investigators allege the woman was driving southbound in a white 2010 Mazda 3 around 8.30am when her vehicle collided with a 2015 silver Kia Rio.

During questioning at the Southport cop shop on Friday afternoon, the woman is accused of pulling a knife from her waistband with two police, brandishing it overhead and threatening the officers.

The officers deployed a taser in response.

No one was physically injured during the incident.

The Pacific Pines woman has been charged with two counts each of serious assault police and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
