A high-ranking Gold Coast police officer has been charged following allegations of excessive force against a man in custody.

According to Queensland Police, the incident took place at the Southport Watchhouse in December last year.

“Ethical Standard Command launched an investigation into the incident which occurred at the Southport Watchhouse on December 9, 2021,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

The 46-year-old male sergeant was suspended from duty and has since been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.

He appeared in the Southport Magistrates Court on August 30.

The officer will front court again on November 15.
