Gold Coasters will be given the opportunity to both mourn and celebrate the life of Queen Elizabeth II at a special event being planned for the city next week.
Full Council will meet this Friday to consider and plan an event “fitting for the passing of Her Majesty”.
The event will take place at Queen Elizabeth Park in Coolangatta on September 22 – the National Day of mourning.
It’s expected to begin around mid-afternoon, with the exact details to be revealed later this week.
“Any event we approve will be a day of reflection so people can pay their respects and look back on the reign of Her Majesty,’’ Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said.
“It will include opportunities to sign our City Condolence Books as well as live music”.
Mayor Tate said all Gold Coasters are being encouraged to attend.
“We are hoping to secure the services of an orchestra,” he said.
“I invite all residents to make their way to the park on September 22, for a time to reflect and remember Her Majesty’s great service to the Commonwealth as well as public life.”
This week’s council will also discuss proposed plans for a “more fitting” memorial for Her Majesty.
However, it will require approval from Buckingham Palace, as well as approval from King Charles III before anything goes ahead.
Mayor Tate says if approved, it is likely the memorial will be established in Queen Elizabeth II Park.
