UPDATE | A major investigation is continuing after a man was shot several times by Police after he allegedly rushed at officers with a knife in Coomera.

Officers attended a home in Bellagio Crescent around 3.20pm on Sunday where they were confronted by the 29-year-old.

Superintendent Brendan Smith says the officers were conducting a welfare check when the incident unfolded.

“The matter’s occurred as a relation to a call for assistance in relation to his potential mental health concerns. On arrival here, he’s confronted police with a knife, and they’ve had to take actions to defend themselves,” Supt Smith said.

“We got information from the course of the day that he was threatening to self-harm and potential threats to other people. So we’ve been to a number of locations today in an attempt to locate him and ended up at this location.”

The man was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition and has since undergone surgery.

He is expected to undergo further surgery on Monday.

Police have been unable to confirm exactly how many times the man was shot or where he was wounded.

The Ethical Standards Command is now investigating the incident with the Crime & Corruption to have oversight of that.

The officers involved are said to be doing “as well as expected.”

“I think nobody should come to work and be worried about not being getting home and this is what we do every day as police officers. Their bravery should be commended. Without dedicated young people out on the road, the community beat a lot worse than what it is.”

Queensland Police Union President Ian Leavers has defended the actions of the officers involved, insisting it would have been a last resort.

“They tried to negotiate themselves. They had no other option but to protect their own lives. They are in fear of their lives, and this is a police officer’s worst nightmare, where they have to use their firearms, but they were left with no other alternative than to use their firearms,” Mr Leavers said.

“I’m advised that everything was recorded on a body-worn video, which will certainly be used with the investigation, but certainly…I have complete confidence in the actions of the police.”
