The Queensland Government has launched a safety crackdown on e-scooters following a series of dangerous incidents.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confirmed on Sunday morning that a package of new regulations is set to be introduced.
It includes halving the speed limits on some footpaths to 12 kilometres per hour.
Warning devices, like a bell, will also be mandated.
Tougher penalties will also be put in place, especially for high-risk offences like speeding, using a mobile phone while riding and riding on prohibited roads.
“From Brisbane to Cairns, E-scooters continue to gain popularity with those who want to leave the car at home or connect with public transport,” Ms Palaszczuk said in a social media post.
“We know Queenslanders are concerned about how we address E-scooter speeding and also finding solutions for E-scooter parking.
“That’s why we will work with disability advocates, shared scheme providers and local government representatives to find E-scooter parking solutions for pathways around the inner-city.”
