LATEST @ 4.00pm A nasty crash has sent the m1 southbound into traffic chaos and hospitalised two people.

The multi-vehicle smash happened around 2.15pm at Ormeau, with the impact causing one car to flip on its roof.

Three of the southbound lanes have been closed, leaving just one lane open and traffic currently at a standstill all the way back to Springwood.

QAS Gold Coast Operations Supervisor Jayney Shearman says the crash involved a truck and two cars.

“A vehicle had struck a stationary car that was being loaded onto a tow truck after it had broken down,” Ms Shearman says.

“After the initial impact, the vehicle rolled and another truck was struck. So in total, there were three cars that were involved and three patients.”

Paramedics, including critical care and the High Acuity Response Unit, attended the scene where they assessed three adult patients.

A female in her 30s sustained abdominal pain, while a man in his 30s suffered facial lacerations and a lower leg injury.

Queensland Ambulance admits the smash could have caused serious injury.

“They were very lucky given the speed and the impact,” Ms Shearman says.

“There was significant damage to all of those vehicles and they were very lucky to have come away from that without more serious injuries.”

The pair have been taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition, while the third patient declined transport.

Police are continuing to urge motorists to avoid the area with lengthy delays ahead.
