A local doctor who was instrumental in establishing an internationally recognised centre for stroke diagnosis, treatment and research has been named Gold Coast Australian of the Year.
Dr Hal Rice was awarded the honour at a special ceremony at the HOTA Exhibitionist Bar on Wednesday evening, with the Mayor praising Dr Rice for his incredible contribution to the city.
“Dr Rice is a passionate Gold Coaster whose focus is on helping people. We need more like him,” Mayor Tate said.

In addition to establishing the innovative Neurointerventional Department at the Gold Coast Hospital, which treats thousands of patients annually, Dr Rice is also responsible for founding Qscan Radiology Clinics and is recognised for his continued efforts to bring international medical conferences to the Gold Coast, generating millions of dollars in revenue for the city.
Other award recipients included Claude ‘The Mower Man’ Harvey, who was named Gold Coast Senior Australian of the Year for his dedication to spreading awareness of child safety. To date, he has personally raised over $1.3 million for Bravehearts by trekking across the country with his trusty mower ‘Moyra’.
Gold Coast Young Australian of the Year was awarded to Bryce U’Ren for his dedication, passion and commitment to ensuring all Australian children diagnosed with cancer receive a Super Max the Turtle night light.
Carly Fradgley took out the Gold Coast Local Hero award for her tireless contribution as Founder of ‘Baby Give Back’ who provide safe and essential items to families in crisis. Now employing 16 staff and over 300 volunteers operating from two locations, the organisation has assisted in excess of 14,000 vulnerable children since 2014.
“Our other award recipients are also outstanding individuals who dedicate their lives to helping some of the most vulnerable in our community. Your selfless contribution to our City has not gone unnoticed,” said Mayor Tate.
The 2022 Gold Coast Australian of the Year Awards have replaced the Gold Coast Citizen of the Year Awards, which were previously part of the city’s Australia Day celebrations. The new model aligns with National Australia Day Council and will help propel outstanding Gold Coasters into the State and National awards programs.
