One person is dead and several others are unaccounted for after a fire ripped through a boarding house in Sydney’s inner west.

Five others were injured in the blaze including one who is fighting for life.

Emergency services were called to the two-level boarding house on Probert St in Newtown at around 1am on Tuesday morning.

The building was well alight when fire crews arrived a short time later with at least eight residents fleeing the building while neighbouring properties were also evacuated.

A man in his 80s was rushed to hospital in a critical condition while several others were treated on scene by paramedics.

Crews located the body of a person once the blaze was eventually extinguished.

Police say that person is yet to be formally identified.

Authorities are working to locate an unknown number of residents who remain unaccounted for with Police unsure if they were also in the building at the time.
