Police are desperately pleading for people to stay home as the death toll from the southeast Queensland flood crisis continues to grow.

A 59-year-old man is the latest to have lost his life after being swept away by raging floodwaters at Fitzgibbon.

According to police, the man came into trouble while trying to cross Cabbage Tree Creek Road on foot around 4.15pm on Sunday.

Other members of the public raised the alarm, calling police and emergency services who rushed to the scene.

Despite their efforts, the man sadly could not be saved and died at the scene.

It takes the total number of people who have died during the severe weather event to seven.

Authorities are urging residents to avoid all non-essential travel, with more than 1000 schools across the southeast closed and people ordered to work from home.
