Brisbane is copping the brunt of the wild weather currently wreaking havoc across the southeast, with authorities warning there’s still a lot more to come.
A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Brisbane City, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning of “very dangerous thunderstorms”.
“Intense rainfall that may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding is likely,” BOM said.
It comes as intense and persistent rain continues to lash the city, with some parts recording more than 700mm of rain over the past three days.
Addressing the media this morning, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said more than 1400 homes were estimated to have already been inundated by floodwaters above their floorboards.
“This is a very extreme weather event that we have at the moment,” the Premier said.
The Brisbane River peaked at 3.1 metres on Sunday morning.
There is a moderate flood warning for the Lower Brisbane River, and the inner city of Brisbane saw some flash flooding on Sunday morning following the high tide.
“The flood warning for the Brisbane River continues to consider the staged releases from Wivenhoe Dam, being managed by SEQ Water,” BOM said.
Photos and videos posted to social media show the level of destruction caused by the deluge, with boats captured ploughing into structures and backyards completely underwater.
The heavy rain is expected to continue throughout Sunday and possibly Monday, before it will finally begin to ease.

One of Brisbane’s busiest roads now a waterway. Milton Road completely cut off. Some using the opportunity to kayak around. Advice is, stay out of floodwater. @9NewsQueensland pic.twitter.com/SFU3nRQumS
