Gold Coaster Kristy-Lee Young knew she wanted to focus on becoming an auto-electrician while completing her senior years at high school.
It is why she decided to leave mainstream school and start at the Australian Industry Trade College (AITC).
Since enrolling, Kristy-Lee has excelled in her chosen field while completing her Year 12 Queensland Certificate of Education.
Each term at the AITC, young people spend five to seven weeks engaged in work-based experiences, and 5 weeks on campus in an education program.
“I like working for several weeks and then going back to school for five weeks,” she said.
“What I have learnt is very different to what other people my age learn in a classroom.
“At the AITC, where you have five weeks to get everything done, it’s so much more thrilling. You know you’ve finished and then you’re about to go out and earn an income — it’s great.”

Kristy-Lee’s commitment, passion and skills as an auto-electrician were recently recognised when she took out the 2021 School-Based Apprentice of the Year at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast.
“Winning the award in auto-electrical is exciting. I was not expecting it at all. It’s really empowering to know I’ve got that,” she said.
Following the win, Kristy-Lee said she is so glad she followed her passion and took the opportunity to study at AITC.
“At the AITC, I’ve only heard words of encouragement and honestly, never give up, you will be able to do it. Just come in, be true to yourself, get good grades and go to work,” she said.
Once she has finished her apprenticeship, Kristy-Lee has her eye on the family business.
“I love the idea of working for my dad’s company and taking it over some day when he retires,” she said.
