QUEENSLAND has recorded another 5,977 new COVID-19 cases, with school-aged children now making up a fifth of the figures.
14 people also died while infected with the virus including ten in aged care.
One person was in their 60s, five were in their 70s, five were in their 80s and three were in their 90s.
Three were not vaccinated while five were double-dosed and four had received three doses of the vaccine.
Hospitalisations declined to 535 patients in public hospital, with 43 in intensive care and 27 on ventilators. There are another 49 people being treated in private facilities.
Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard said school aged children now make up close to a fifth of the new cases, with 1149 cases in kids aged 5-17.
627 kids aged between five and 17 tested positive in the last reporting period, 280 from PCR tests and 347 from rapid antigen tests. There were also 522 cases in kids aged 12-17, 236 from PCR tests and 286 from RATs.
“I think that the main lesson from that is that this virus is very wide spread,” Dr Gerrard said.
“There’s a lot of children that have the virus and have mild symptoms and that’s been the case for several weeks.
“This is not something that is concerning us greatly but we will keep a close eye on this as the days go by.
“We just need to see what happens with the trend in children but it’s not a surprise and we’re not unduly concerned
“We expect that in the coming weeks the numbers will decline.”
