Queensland has recorded a promising dip in COVID-19 cases today, with 7462 new infections detected.
Sadly, the state has also recorded a further three deaths in the past 24 hours.
One person was aged in their 60s, one was aged in their 80s and another was aged in their 90s.
“Of these three, two had two doses of vaccine and one had in fact had that three doses of vaccine,” Chief Health Officer John Gerrard said.
The State’s top doctor has also cautioned us against reading too much into today’s drop in numbers, warning it’s only one day.
“I probably wouldn’t read too much into a single day of reduced data, we need to look for a trend of what’s happening with deaths but our thoughts are with their families,” Dr Gerrard said.
It comes after more than 15,586 tests, including PCR and Rapid Antigen, were conducted in the past 24 hours.
Hospital numbers across the state also continue to fall, with 744 people now being treated for the virus in hospital, including 46 in Intensive Care.
“I would say that over the last seven days, last Monday, the 24 January, there were 878 patients in public hospitals in Queensland,” Dr Gerrard said.
“That’s fallen to 744 today… That’s a 15% decrease.
“Much of that reduction has been in a relatively small number of areas, including the Gold Coast, Logan, Ipswich and Cairns.”
The peak on the Gold Coast is well and truly on its way down, with the city recording 537 new COVID-19 cases today.
That’s down from 750 new cases on the Gold Coast on Sunday.
“We’re expecting that the numbers will start to turn in the rest of South East Queensland and elsewhere in Queensland in the next seven days,” Dr Gerrard said.
Queensland is inching closer to being 90 per cent fully vaccinated, with the double dose vax rate currently sitting at 89.53 per cent.
Currently, 91.98 per cent of Queenslanders have had at least one dose.
